Gospel Questions

"with a
little bit of scheming, Tamar bore a child that was Judah's. You
could say that here Tamar was more sinned against than sinning, but
God acknowledged the fact that Tamar persisted because she wanted so
much to be part of His people as she had faith in Him and His
promise of life."
I could be interpreting this wrong, but it seems like it's saying
that Tamar's sin was justified because her intent was to be with
God. I guess I don't understand the concept of sin when it comes to
situations like this. can a sin be justified? can stealing be
justified if it's to feed your children? Can you be glorified for
murder if it was done in the name of God? Also, dealing with sin,
are all sins of the same level? can one be greater than the other?
I've heard it both ways. isn't any sin a sin no matter what? any way
you think about it, you're going against God's words. So in this
sense, people who are so adamantly against homosexuality---why
aren't they passionately against telling white lies or disobeying
your parents? one sin isn't greater than the other. and if you
repent, you will be forgiven for those sins. or are there different
levels of sins? can you be forgiven for one easily, and another it
takes a lot more to be forgiven?

- This question was raised in school...so
I'm just curious to find out the answer. If heliocentrism states
that the sun is the center of the universe, and that the earth and
other planets revolve around it, then why did Joshua tell the sun to
stand still during the battle, when it's not even moving?

- A. This question
goes back to the heart of defining sin. Sin is essentially a
separation from God. The level of this separation can differ in
degrees. It's similar to the separation we have with others when we
wrong them. Telling a small lie versus betraying them has different
implications. The extent of the separation caused by a betrayal is
obviously far more. In a similar manner, we move away from God
through our sins. God's still there in His place waiting for us, but
it is we who draw further away from Him.
In Luke 12:10, Jesus says, "anyone who blasphemes against the Holy
Spirit will not be forgiven". Why so? It is the ultimate separation
from God. Other sins may be forgiven with a repentant and contrite
heart, but the separation caused by blaspheming the Holy Spirit is
far too much to repair.
So, certainly there are differing degrees of sin just as there are
differing degrees of punishment in the court of law. But in the end,
all sin is a separation from God and this is why we are called to
"become blameless and pure, children of God without fault"
(Philippians 2:15).

- B. I think the
Bible reveals that some sins are worse than others. All sin leads to
death but Christ saved us from this. In Exodus 32:21,30,31 the words
“great sin” are used multiple times. Verse 31 states, "So Moses went
back to the Lord and said, 'Oh, what a great sin these people have
committed! They have made themselves gods of gold.” John 19 is about
Jesus’ sentencing to be crucified. Verse 10-11 states, “Do you
refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power
either to free you or to crucify you?” Jesus answered, “You would
have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.
Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater
sin.” These two examples show that there are greater and lesser
sins.
Some sins can carry a greater punishment. Matthew 23:14 states, “Woe
to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You
devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Therefore
you will be punished more severely.”

- In the past when I have read this portion
of scripture, I have understood it to mean that Joshua told the sun
to remain standing longer than usual versus setting on time as with
routine. I thought this to mean that Joshua wanted daylight to last
longer so that there would be sufficient time for the battle to end,
as he desired. I don't know if this is the true meaning of this
verse, for this is just my personal interpretation!
