Part 4: Posted April 2006

Another equipment used during the service is the fan or marvahtho.  It’s hard to miss since we not only see it but hear it.  Plus, it’s used during any important parts of the service.  They are fans made of silver in the form shown on this picture.  It is always used in pairs with the center showing the seraphic face and wings.  The rim of the fan is full of small round bells which jingle as the fan is shaken, producing a pleasant sound.  The fan represents the seraphim and the flutter of their wings.  They are present around the mysteries of God, whom they serve and surround.

The handbells and church bell is also used during important moments of the Eucharist service.  They are also regarded as accompaniments.  They essentially get the people ready for worship and prayer at church.  The church bells in India especially serve the purpose of assembling the people for church.  Mor Jacob says, “When you hear the sound of bell, hasten your run to the holy church”.
